Eric Jenkins, MD, Senior Medical Director and Head of Clinical Operations

Dr. Jenkins rejoined Athersys as Medical Director in 2016, where he is responsible for medical oversight of all clinical development activities. With 20 years of clinical experience, he contributes medical expertise to the Company’s long-term strategic planning and serves as the medically-informed voice for external communications with clinical investigators, regulators, key opinion-leaders and patient communities. In addition, Dr. Jenkins currently leads the pre-commercial medical affairs activities, including preparation for market access, coding and reimbursement for MultiStem® cell therapy products following approval.



Prior to joining Athersys, Dr. Jenkins served as Medical Officer at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emergency Operations Center on the Ebola and Zika virus emergency responses, and as a consultant Clinical Advisor to WHO in Sierra Leone during the 2014/2015 West Africa Ebola outbreak. He continues to serve his community as a practicing emergency physician and as a helicopter EMS physician for a major regional trauma system. As a trustee board member of a local and regional hospital, he currently serves on the Executive Leadership Committees and chairs the Hospitals’ Board Quality and Credentialing Committees.


Dr. Jenkins earned a B.A. at Oberlin College and his M.D. at Case Western Reserve University and completed post-graduate physician training at University of Massachusetts Medical Center and University Hospitals, Cleveland Medical Center.
